Allegations by 9 people had spanned 20 years

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has reached out-of-court settlements with seven men and two women who alleged that when they were minors, they were molested by convicted child-abuser Father William Effinger.

The allegations in their lawsuits span 20 years from Effinger’s first parish assignment to his last.

In an unrelated case, the archdiocese also recently paid a settlement to a man who alleges that in 1985, at age 17, he was sexually abused by his parish priest in Whitewater.

Attorney Robert L. Elliott, who represented the plaintiffs in all of those cases, confirmed the settlements Monday but said he could not disclose the amounts.

As is the usual practice in Wisconsin, the suits did not specify how much money was being sought.

"I can say that my clients are satisfied with the settlements,” he said.
